[giving tuesday] december 2020

The perfect kick-off to an entire season of giving!

A lot of us have been so fortunate to be able to work from home throughout this pandemic. We all know someone who hasn't had it so easy. Take this Giving Tuesday and all of December to find small and big ways to donate. Here are some of my favorite local non-profits and links for ways to donate:

  • YWCA | YWCA Spokane is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

  • Transitions | Working to end poverty and homelessness for women and children in Spokane.

  • Project Beauty Share | Provides personal hygiene, cosmetics and beauty products to non-profit organizations who serve women and families.

  • Books to Prisoners Spokane | Working to provide free reading materials to incarcerated individuals at their request.

Don't forget about the arts!

  • Terrain | Building community and economic opportunity for the artists, makers, and culture creators of the Inland Northwest.

  • Spokane Civic Theater | Fostering an enduring love for live theatre in the community.

  • Spokane Symphony | Orchestral music nurtures the human spirit, enhances the quality of life and is integral to the preservation and development of culture.

And, for a dose of design, here is the latest from Martin Brattrud.

[take a memo] october 2020

Memorable furniture manufactured right out of Seattle!

Happy October - my birthday month!

A new season and the final quarter of the year always gives me the urge to both reflect and prepare.  I love to write down all of the fun and success I've had during the year so far.  It's also time to start planning for my birthday trip - and, don't freak out - the holidays!  Although this year doesn't offer a lot of options for travel, I'll still be headed to Missoula to celebrate and enjoy those bright yellow tamaracks!

20191024_124600 (2).jpg

Take a stab at your own reflection and just feel good about yourself!

  • What memories did you make this summer?

  • What habits or mindsets are you ready to let go of?

  • What are you most proud of this year?

And now, here is the story of Memo!

MEMO

Memo is a new company, but its founders are a group of long-time industry leaders, designers, and entrepreneurs. Their relationships began in 2002 at Seattle-based Brandrud Furniture, where they partnered to transform a small regional furniture company into a highly successful brand known for its focus on design and innovation. In 2008, Brandrud was acquired by Herman Miller and relocated to the Midwest. In 2018, Memo was created. The vision was to harness the chemistry, experience in furniture, and passion for design, to do something memorable that could enrich peoplesโ€™ lives. The name Memo, in fact, is shorthand for the word memorable; always reminding us of our vision and inspiring us to remain true to our purpose.

The furniture pieces are subtle and sophisticated.  They offer opportunities for contrasting materials and textures.  They fit into a variety of categories - healthcare, workplace, education, and even home.  Take a look!

[neo-can't] september 2020

All the amazing products that would have been released at the Mart this year!

Welcome to September.  It's been a really weird summer - and spring for that matter!  I miss seeing your faces and hope that you're doing well and able to stay productive.  I keep trying to hold on to summer any way I can (to the point where I may be a little cranky at anyone who says it's coming to an end! ) I've lived in the area for over 15 years and have only recently discovered Templin's in Post Falls.  I took a day last weekend to swim and paddleboard from this public beach.  It might be my new go-to for water fun and beach sitting.

[discover dekton] august 2020

New colors and gorgeous facades!

Happy (almost) August - so glad the sunshine has decided to stick around!  How lucky we are to have so much outdoor space to play in.  Lakes, rivers, woods - all great ways to cool off and enjoy nature.  I recently took a personal retreat for a couple days in Missoula and was able to enjoy all those things!  Although I've been doing this for years, I've always done it with Mika (my recent ex-wife).  This was the first time on my own.  It was so empowering for me to be able to take the time for myself and stay focused on my personal and professional development - all by myself!  At a season in my life where I'm still rebuilding from the uncertainty of a divorce, this was exactly what I needed.  I definitely urge you all to take the time for yourselves - whether it's a reset, reaching that next level of development, or finding your purpose.  Itโ€™s something that I canโ€™t live without.

If you're unaware, my personal business name is Ampersand.  Yes, I contract with Kayser Wesner for most of the manufacturers I represent and they are an amazing company who I love to work with and have learned a ton from.  Through Ampersand, I represent Cosentino surfaces.  Something I love about having my own business is that I can constantly evolve and share anything I like!  So, today, you get Cosentino pretties, but you also get some of my very favorite resources for a DIY retreat!

The lower walls around the entrance were inspired by Mizzou's iconic diamond pattern.  Mizzou has dubbed this entrance "The Entrance of Champions".

Dekton Domoos and Spectra were used on the facade for the contrasting matte and gloss finishes.  This was the perfect material for this application.  On top of the unique design capabilities were the UV stability, stain/graffiti resistance, and dimensional consistency were all important considerations when selecting Dekton.

[slow the spread] july 2020

Sensible social distancing for our return to public spaces.

There is still so much uncertainty about flattening the curve and slowing the spread of COVID19.  What I do know is that we certainly should have invested in acrylic!   I'm sure you've read all kinds of studies about what the new normal will be.  Of course, these are very educated guesses, but we won't really know until we're there.  The designer has a lot of say about how we move forward.  End users are looking to you for recommendations.  Be sure you're armed with multiple scenarios.  Some of my manufacturers are focusing on longer term aesthetic solutions, others are assuming this will be temporary.  It likely depends on the use of the space.

[happy friday] june 2020

In this unprecedented time it can be hard to be inspired.

So, this is June.  Whatever emotions you're having regarding the pandemic, the protests, and the world, it's so important to take the time to find inspiration.  Here are some designers and a bit of their furniture design process.

ENJOY!

JEHS+LAUB | DAVIS

Markus Jehs and Jรผrgen Laub met each other during the academic studies of industrial design at the Hochschule fรผr Gestaltung Schwaebisch Gmuend and became friends after an internship in New York in 1990. After they graduated in 1992 they set up jehs+laub in 1994. From that time on they started to design furniture and lamps for Italian companies, such as Cassina, Ycami and Nemo.

image (22).png

FELICIA BALESTRERE | MARTIN BRATTRUD

As an associate designer at Populous, a global architecture and design group, Felicia Balestrere designs large-scale interior spaces and experiences. She is a key member of the firmโ€™s product development team, developing concepts and designs for new furniture products to advance clientsโ€™ goals. Felicia designed the Contollo Collection for Martin Brattrud, as well as Lutta tables with Adam Stover.

image (23).png

STUDIO GORM | MEMO

Studio Gorm creates simple, practical and thoughtful products, furniture, lighting, and exhibitions. Their designs are informed by speculative academic research which explores culture, history and technology, and how objects and ideas evolve to fit the needs of contemporary life. As designers, they draw from their background in sculpture and craft to create works that balance function and aesthetics. Their methods are deeply rooted in the act of physical making where an objectโ€™s form evolves out of an experimental constructive approach to design.

My personal tips for wellbeing while wfh and social distancing!

Happy May Day everyone!  We made it through an entire calendar month+ of staying at home. You may have changed your daily routine, or lost it completely.  But, there are small things you can do every day to stay well and happy even during these huge changes.

FEED YOUR CREATIVITY

Love Good Color | One of my favorite design groups, including the fabulous Laura Guido Clark.  I follow the Instagram page for daily inspiration.

image (15).png

Weed & Read | My favorite pass-time.  I put on an audiobook and start weeding my flower beds.  If you have a library card, you have access to thousands of free audiobooks through RB Digital and Hoopla.  I'm currently listening to Normal People, which is also a new Hulu TV show.

image (16).png

REST UP

Insight Timer | I use this app for any meditation, but I especially love the bedtime stories!  My recent favorite is The Wind in the Willows.  But my go-to is A Day in the City.  I'm asleep in about 10 minutes after I turn these on!

image (17).png

STRETCH YOUR MUSCLES

Android Stretching App | Super simple guided stretching.  I like to do this in the morning and before bed.  There are lots of routines to select from.

image (18).png

NEVER STOP LEARNING

Full Color Fridays | While you may be missing that daily collaboration, here is an opportunity to get another perspective on your projects.  Laura Guido Clark hosts one hour discussions  to answer your color questions.

[happy new year] january 2020

I can't believe it's 2020!

Hello All!

Looking back over the last decade(+) of my design career, I'm reminded of how fortunate I am to be part of such a great community.  Starting out as a designer, and now as a rep, I've always felt so welcome and valued by my peers and mentors.  Not every industry is so open and I'm so glad that I've gotten a chance to meet you all and work with you in some capacity.

Here's to a wonderful new year and new decade full of new possibilities!

Please don't hesitate to reach out with any needs.

And, while I have you, here are some fun products that were released over the last year:

KRUG | ASCEND

Revolutionary new design, combining the functions of an exam table and a recliner into a single unit with back, foot, and height adjustability - a major step forward in the efficiency of space and in the provision of care and comfort to patients and their caregivers.  Check out this video demo starring me!

SKYLINE DESIGN | HARDWARE + LAMINATED INTERLAYERS

Dignity glass is a complete door system for healthcare applications that offers privacy for the patient and visibility for the provider.

Color glass across the full spectrum of vibrant colors, available in a range of translucency levels. Skyline Design's laminated glass for interior and exterior use is composed of EVA interlayers fabricated in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.

TAKEFORM | LUCID

When chaos reigns, a counterbalance is in order. One way to respond: simple, luminous interior design. We conceived Lucid as the ideal complement to such a design. A product as subtle as it is refined.  This video gives a nice overview.

[dry erase glass]

Incorporate high design within your ultra-functional spaces!

So often, you need a dry erase surface, but it needs to incorporate seamlessly into your design...

Or, you may want it to make a statement...

Both are possible with Skyline Design, using our Vitracolor back painted glass technique.  We'll match any Pantone color, so you can get the exact look you need.

And for more functionality, add magnetic steel backer and accessories!

Watson really knocked it out of the park this year with Cloud9!

Check out the fantastic offerings with Watson's latest open office concept - Cloud9

unnamed.jpg

Contract Magazine awards Cloud9, a new furniture system for the open plan, with two Best of Neocon Gold awards, and one Silver award. Cloud9 was designed for real people who work best at their desk. To imagine a new furniture system, Watson explored the open plan for insights. The result is a workstation that departs from the restrictive grid of traditional linear planning โ€” bending space, improving sightlines, and helping people to flow more organically.

Take a closer look at our award-winning products.

unnamed (1).jpg

Space planning with Cloud9 breaks the grid of traditional linear planning. The resulting patterns express a new spatial language โ€” one that frees the imagination to weave a more inspired human office.

[peter pepper's slalom]

handling acoustics in the open office!

Here's a great article on Peter Pepper and their keeping up with ancillary trends in the workplace.  Plus, some great install images of the acoustic panels offered by Peter Pepper!

The open office โ€” what a concept. Touted as the destroyer of traditional workplace hierarchies and the harbinger of a new era of productivity, the lived reality is something a little less than ideal for most office workers. While itโ€™s true that the open layout encourages more collaboration and a sense of community within an office, the noise that is generated from all this communing can negatively affect workers. This has given rise to a whole host of acoustical architectural products specifically designed to abate the din and restore the promise of productivity.

The open office has also lead to a new paradigm in contract specification. The oft-uttered phrase โ€œancillary is the new primaryโ€ describes the rise in the number of specialized sofas, benches, chairs, side tables, and conference tables that populate the myriad break out/flex spaces open offices necessitate. Together these two influences have presented some interesting challenges for manufacturers.

One brand that has been particularly adept at adapting to this new reality is Peter Pepper Products, a 67-year-old company that got its start in the eponymous founderโ€™s home. Based in the Los Angeles area, Peter Pepper Products was founded on an early recognition that taking the long view with regard to what people need in their workplaces would be a better strategy than merely responding to trends. Their rich portfolio of ancillary pieces have seen a boom in specification and appreciation from designers contending with the rise of open offices.

โ€œAs a start up in 1952, Peter Pepperโ€™s legacy of design innovation is focused on the accessory products,โ€ says Kip Pepper, vice president of sales and marketing at Peter Pepper Products. โ€œAnd as accessories have now evolved into the ancillary product category with the change from system furniture to the open plan workplace, Peter Pepper in essence has evolved with the space planning trends to continually develop ancillary solutions for all commercial environments.โ€

At NeoCon, Peter Pepper Products will unveil their Slalom acoustical panels, demonstrating to the design industry that the brand is addressing the open office problem from all angles. Slalom features a light, thin, and frameless profile rendered in 100% recycled polyester fiber. For this reason they are certified GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD GOLD. The brand also offers the panels in a wide variety of colorful finishes that can pair with any interior palette.

โ€œOur aim with Slalom is to improve the acoustic comfort and therefore the quality of the work environment,โ€ says Pepper. โ€œWe strive for better communication and therefore better collaboration, improved concentration with an increase in productivity, and a decrease of annoyance to elevate the working spirit, comfort and enhanced overall performance.โ€

Accurate technical drawings are essential to how well the finished product succeeds. Martin Brattrud, together with the client, must review and approve all drawings prior to manufacture, making sure that the design arrived at meets all criteriaโ€”and there are no surprises when the banquette is built and ready to install.
